・ Release Notes:
"Don't get too proud of this technological terror you've constructed."
- James Earl Jones in Star Wars: A New Hope.
*** Trash It! is more powerful than ever. It will now delete ANYTHING that you want it to! ***
Updated Stuff (since 2.0):
- When you drag-n-drop a volume into Trash It!, a dialog will appear allowing you to reset the desktop, erase the volume, or cancel.
- If you hold down the mouse button while clicking on Trash It's icon, or click and quickly move the mouse outside of Trash It's icon box, a popup menu will appear with Trash It's warning settings:
- Warn before any deletion process starts
- Warn before deleting each busy file
- And a recycling setting that does nothing functionally, but just encourages the user to recycle :)
- All of these warnings will be ignored if you hold down the option key. If you drag a volume onto Trash It! while holding down the option key, it will proceed to erase everything on the volume. Special thanks to Oumar Ka for reminding me to add this.
- Completely rewrote the deletion code to include the following features. Very special thanks to Hendrik Klaassen for his extensive testing of the beta version and for finding the remote volume bug, as well as some original bugs.
- Will now delete folders that the Finder says contain busy items even though the directory is empty. This annoying situation occurs when a program forgets to close one of its working directories but now you don't have to reboot in order to delete it.
- Will delete busy files that have multiple open reference numbers instead of just one. For example, deleting an open SimpleText document like the one you're reading will now work.
- The trash on remote volumes will now be deleted.
- Trash It! checks if the user pressed Command-period more often now so the cancellation response is faster.
- Fixed a tiny drag and drop bug that caused the module's icon to appear if it is hidden on the Control Strip bar.
・ About This Strip:ハ
What is it?
This is a Control Strip module who's strip icon is pictured above. To use, simply put it into the Control Strip Modules folder and restart. If you do not have a Control Strip Modules folder (located in the root of your System folder) then you probably do not have the Control Strip control panel installed. Apple does not permit me to distribute Control Strip to other people (probably since it comes with System 7.5.) Desktop Macs can use Control Strip by modifying it with the Control Strip Patcher program that is widely available online (and on Skidperfect's www page listed above.)
To be able to use this module you will need to have the new Apple drag manager. It is a built in part of System 7.5 and is an extension under System 7.1. You can obtain this extension from ftp.apple.com in the dts/mac/sys.soft/extensions directory. Please don't ask me for this file or the Control Strip program since I am not allowed to distribute either of them.
Features:
・ Clicking on the module's Strip icon will empty the trash without telling any warnings about locked or busy files/folders. Note that it may take the Finder a couple seconds to update the trash icon to show that it is empty.
・ Dragging and dropping files or folders onto the module's icon will immediately delete them all with NO questions asked, unless you set in the settings to be warned. It will delete locked and even busy files/folders.
・ If you drag a volume (a hard or floppy disk) onto the module's icon, then a dialog will appear allowing you to reset the desktop, erase the volume, or cancel.
・ You can cancel the drag-n-drop deleting or the emptying of the trash by hitting command(□)-period(.) at anytime because Trash It! checks for these keys before it deletes each file or folder.
・ If you hold down the mouse button while clicking on Trash It's icon, or click and quickly move the mouse outside of Trash It's icon box, a popup menu will appear with Trash It's warning settings:
- Warn before any deletion process starts
- Warn before deleting each busy file
- And a recycling setting that does nothing functionally, but just encourages the user to recycle :)
・ All of these warnings will be ignored if you hold down the option key. If you drag a volume onto Trash It! while holding down the option key, it will proceed to erase everything on the volume.
Notes:
・ I've been asked to convert Trash It! into a drag-n-drop application. This would not be a good idea because aliases get automatically resolved so, for instance, if you want to delete an alias to your System Folder, the whole folder will get deleted. Trash It! Strip does not resolve alaises so the alias file that you drag to delete, will be deleted.
・ Deleting busy files that you know should be busy, can be a bad thing. Also, do not directly delete fonts out of the fonts folder.
・ Deleting busy files can be very fun though! Try this: make a new folder on your desktop. Copy SimpleText into the folder. Launch this SimpleText. Now delete the folder. SimpleText will "quit" but stay in the program menu. Now switch to SimpleText and force quit it (by presssing command, option, escape.) You will notice that SimpleText will instantly quit. Weird, wild stuff huh.
